Five Apps Battle Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies

Short-drama apps ceased to be a fringe curiosity some time ago. Sensor Tower counted about $700M in global in-app revenue for the category in Q1 2025, and the US produced 49% of it. By short series Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M, while full-year 2025 ended up at roughly $2.8–3B. Search a store for a short reels app and you will meet at least one of the five names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface they appear identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. Look underneath, though, and they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that change what you pay and where you can watch. Across six rounds, we named a winner in each, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Comparison Grid

This grid puts the entire field on one screen before the rounds begin. The prices come from the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We took install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so wherever no reliable source published the figure, the cell says “not reported”. The grid is the scoreboard, and the rounds below are the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale

As the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China; launched in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group. According to MPA, its 2025 revenue came to $785M, with $1.05B projected for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M by Sensor Tower’s count, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. The youngest app here is DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, yet it already holds about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly exceeded $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax appears to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture’s ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. As a point of reference, GoodShort, which sits just outside this field, holds about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: What It Costs

The apps look most alike in this round. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave sells a weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax additionally lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, while DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox takes a different route: auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99. The real standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Since four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the better buy for steady viewers. Because prices change by country, platform and promotion, the number on your screen may differ. Winner: DramaWave, since its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals comfortably.

Round 3: Free Ways to Watch

Free viewing is the topic where the marketing gets loud and the details get thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, according to ReelShort’s own blog. A seven-day check-in streak earns 100+ coins, but free reward coins usually expire, while paid coins do not. Official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Avoid look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Winner: ReelShort, and clearly so.

Round 4: Platforms

These apps genuinely split apart on the question of screens. iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android are all covered by ReelShort, which also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app, and DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. Since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. With an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama plays the trump card. If a shorts app on your phone is all you need, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, with My Drama claiming the living room.

Round 5: Libraries and Original Series

ShortMax is unbeatable on raw numbers. More than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets had been produced by the company behind ShortTV as of January 2024 (most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations), and the app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly uses AI to generate more than 80% of its newly released content. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox counters with an LA production team and originals like Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. The most intriguing pipeline belongs to My Drama, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print

This one belongs to DramaWave with ease. No other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing, while its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video. Anyone who switches between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. The fine print deserves a look too, because it varies more than the prices do. Cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave, easily.

Best For: The Final Verdict

The right choice depends on how you watch, since no single short drama app wins every round. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. ReelShort is best for web viewing, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, since it combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. For backing the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. Best for free, legitimate sampling is ReelShort again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if all five tempt you.
